Target group
The course is aimed at students with a subject-specific Bachelor's degree or an equivalent first professional qualification. The subject share in Ancient History or Classical Studies must be at least 60 CP. The overall grade should usually be at least 'good'.
Annotation
Content and structure: The Master's programme in History of Antiquity, which is carried out by the Chair of Ancient History, is research-oriented and conveys in-depth specialist knowledge, skills and methods in the scientific analysis of the history of the ancient world and its neighbouring cultures\; in terms of content, it covers the entire spectrum of the ancient world from early Greek history to late antiquity. The degree course combines the perspectives of history and the ancient sciences and conveys in-depth knowledge in the interpretation of the different sources of ancient history. In addition to independent scientific work, the course also gives space for the practical application of knowledge in an internship or an excursion. Special features in Jena: The knowledge of the students is rounded off by attending additional courses from neighbouring disciplines such as Middle and New History, Classical Studies (Classical Philology and Archaeology), Pre- and Early History or Theology. Perspectives and outlook: The successful completion of the Master's degree course in 'History of Antiquity' qualifies for areas of university and non-university historical and ancient science research and teaching, media, documentaries, adult education, political education, public relations and administration as well as for activities in governmental and non-governmental institutions and organisations. You can also deepen your academic qualification through a doctoral programme.
Admission requirements
A subject related requirement is proof of academic achievements in the field of Ancient History or Ancient Studies amounting to at least 60 credit points and a final grade of at least 'good' as well as the Latinum and Graecum. The latter can also be acquired during the degree course until the registration of the Master's thesis. Furthermore, commad of a modern foreign language at level B2 as well as command of a second modern foreign language (French or Italian) is desirable. International applicants are required to provide proof of command of German at the level of a DSH test (stage 2), a TestDaF (TDN 4) or a recognised equivalent.
