Target group
The Master's course in Linguistics is aimed at students who are highly interested in the connection between universally orientated linguistic subjects and subjects relating to individual languages, language families and linguistic areas.
Annotation
A key area or specialisation must be chosen at the time of enrolment. Up to the end of the second subject-related semester the specialism can be changed once if the admission requirements are met. If the Bachelor degree certificate is not available by the application deadline, but at least 135 credit points can be demonstrated: Submit a certificate of study and examinations and the average grade achieved so far. (This certificate must be issued by the relevant higher education institution, original or officially authenticated copy). After enrolment, the diploma must be submitted. If the degree was obtained abroad: officially authenticated copy of a certificate of recognition (responsible: Student Service - Admission International).
Admission requirements
A requirement for admission is the selection of a specialisation area during registration. Up to the end of the second subject-related semester, the specialisation can be changed once as long as the admission requirements for the newly chosen specialisation have also been met. The change must be discussed with the affected key representatives and the coordinator of the MA Linguistics must be informed. The admission prerequisites differ depending upon the subject-specific specialisations: 1. Focus on African studies First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university with a Linguistics component or one in the field of African Studies/African Linguistics of at least 36 credit points, or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-related courses and exams. Evidence for having had language lessons in African languages equalling 14 credit points or equivalent achievement in a previous degree course. It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. The ability to work through French texts is also assumed. 2. Specialisation in General and Comparative Linguistics First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university with a Linguistics component of at least 36 credit points, or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-related courses and exams. It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. 3. Focus on English linguistics First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university with a Linguistics component or in the field of English language / English linguistics of at least 36 credit points, or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-related courses and exams. Students must have a very active and passive command of English sufficient to for the production of written course papers as well as for the successful completion of oral and written examinations. As a matter of principal the language of instruction and examinations is English. In some events German may also be used as a teaching and examination language. Proof of language skills can take the form of one of the following: Test results must not be older than 2 years by the end of the application period: - Successful pass in the practical language admissions test of the Department of English and Linguistics of the JGU (verification of language skills commensurate with CEFR level C1). The test can be retaken at the start of the 2 following semesters. Failure to pass the test in the second retake will lead to an irrevocable fail. Failed practical language admission tests will be counted as failed attempts when changing to a new subject within the English Faculty. If the entrance test can no longer be passed or repeated, it is no longer possible to continue studying in the same Master's program. - Certificate in Advanced English (from: Cambridge ESOL\; minimum grade: C) – Certificate of Proficiency in English (from: Cambridge ESOL\; minimum grade: C) – the “Test of English as a Foreign Language” (TOEFL\; from: Educational Testing Service) with at least 85 out of 120 points (Internet-based TOEFL [iBT]) or 567 out of 677 points (written version of the TOEFL [IPT]). 4. Focus on Slavic linguistics First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree (including B.Ed.) with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university or an equivalent degree, whereby at least 36 credit points have to have been acquired in the field of Linguistics or in the field of Slavic Linguistics. In courses for which credit points are not awarded a commensurate amount of such subject-specific and examination results needs to have been acquired. Students are required to have good active and passive language skills in either two Slavic or one Slavic and one Baltic language, all of which correspond to at least level B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Evidence can be in the form of: - Proof of mother tongue knowledge - Proof of a degree with at least 36 credit points in the field of Slavic linguistics (possibly also under terms such as Slavic Philology). In courses for which credit points are not awarded a commensurate amount of such subject-specific and examination results needs to have been acquired. - via a corresponding language certificate It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. 5. Focus on languages of Northern Europe and the Baltic States First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university with a Linguistics component or one in the field of Scandinavian Studies, Baltic Studies, Finnish Studies- of at least 36 credit points, or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-related courses and exams. Students are required to have good active and passive language skills in at least one Nordic (i.e. Scandinavian or Baltic Sea Finnish) or Baltic language that is at least level A2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Evidence is provided through - Proof of mother tongue knowledge - via a corresponding language certificate - proof of a degree with at least 36 credit points in the field of Scandinavian, Baltic or Baltic Finnish Studies or an equivalent degree with the same scope of subject-related study and examination achievements. In courses for which credit points are not awarded a commensurate amount of such subject-specific and examination results needs to have been acquired. It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. 6. Focus on German linguistics First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university with a Linguistics component or in the field of Linguistics of at least 36 credit points, or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-related courses and exams. It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. Evidence of having attended an introductory teaching module on the History of Language. If the evidence has not been produced by the application deadline then it can be supplied up to the end of the first subject-related semester of Master's degree course. The German seminar ensures that a relevant teaching event can be attended during the first subject-related semester of Master's degree course. 7. Focus on Turkish Studies First university degree: A prerequisite for admission is a completed Bachelor's degree with a regular study period of at least 6 semesters at a German or international university or an equivalent degree, At least one of the following references must be proven: A Linguistics or Turkish Linguistics/Turkish Philology component equalling at least 36 credit points or in the case of a degree course not awarded credit points, an equivalent quantity of subject-related modules and examinations. It is required that students have good active and passive language skills in Turkish or any other Turkish language that are at least at the level B2 of the European reference framework for languages. Evidence can be in the form of: - Proof of mother tongue knowledge - proof of a degree with at least 36 credit points in the field of Turkish Studies \; in courses that do not have credit points, an equivalent amount of such subject-related study and examination achievements must have been achieved - via a corresponding language certificate It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language. 8. Focus on French Linguistics First university degree: Admission requires the completion of a bachelor's degree (including B.Ed) with a standard period of study of at least six semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with a share in the field of Linguistics or in the field of French Linguistics or French Philology and of at least 36 credit points (LP) or an equivalent degree with an equivalent scope of subject-related study and examination achievements. It is necessary that students have a good active and passive command of the French language, commensurate overall with CEFR level B2 Proof provided by a relevant Bachelor's degree in French Philology or French Linguistics or through proof of mother tongue or through the language certificate Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française (DELF B2). It is required that students have very good passive English language skills that enable fluent reading of extensive specialist texts and understanding of lectures and courses in this language.
