Musicology

Target group

Musicology deals with musical phenomena of all kinds and how they are connected. In Tübingen, the focus is on the history of music, the subject of which is traditionally Western music from antiquity to the present. Emphasis is placed on the exploration of music-historically relevant sources, the historical foundations of composition (types, genres, forms) as well as the analysis and interpretation of music. The aim is to instil a comprehensive understanding of musical works in their historical and interdisciplinary contexts. Interfaces can be found in particular with the historical disciplines such as history or art history, linguistic and literary studies, philosophy, theology, religious studies, media sciences, social sciences and ethnology. In lectures and main seminars, the understanding of conversions in compositional techniques and the form-building of compositions from the Middle Age to the Modern Age is promoted and the interdisciplinary perspective is reinforced. Discussion groups debate current academic issues. The course is completed with a MA thesis and oral exam. The Institute of Musicology Located on the premises of the Pfleghof, in the middle of the historic old town of Tübingen, the institute offers optimal study conditions. Cooperation agreements with the local publishers (New Schubert Edition, Monuments of Music in Baden-Wuerttemberg) and the Collegium musicum enrich the offer and provide an opportunity for practical experience. The institute is home to the Swabian State Music Archives and the extensive collection of musical instruments from the Karl Ventzke Foundation (wind instruments predominantly from the 19th century).
