Study Mathematics, Natural Sciences in Germany

Explore 3658 programmes in 12 fields.

The subject group mathematics and natural sciences is all about getting to the bottom of things. In mathematics, you solve specific tasks using logical thinking and by applying mathematical methods and algorithms. In the natural sciences, such as chemistry or physics, you will also use mathematical methods to research fundamental laws. You will then test these in practical experiments - be it in nature or in the laboratory.

Mathematics, Natural Sciences is divided into 12 fields of study.

Biology

Degree programmes in the field of biology deal with all life that exists on earth. This includes microorganisms such as bacteria, but also fungi, animals, and plants at all stages of development.

Chemistry

Chemistry is all around us: We are surrounded by interacting substances in both the animate and inanimate world. As a chemist, you will spend a lot of time in laboratories researching these things.

Computer Science

Smartphones, computers, the internet: These everyday products are inconceivable without information technology. A computer science programme will let you study the basics of hardware and software.

Environmental Sciences

Would you like to deal with global issues such as climate change, global warming, or water pollution on a scientific level? If so, a programme in environmental sciences could be a good fit for you.

Geography

If you are excited by the natural and social sciences, the study of geography could be a good fit for you. You learn how the environment shapes people, and, in turn, how people shape the environment.

Geosciences

Geosciences deal with the natural composition of the earth. In your studies, you will learn to determine the composition of rocks, the earth’s crust, and water and examine interactions.

Mathematics

Mathematics is an exact and logical science that trains your structured thinking skills. In your studies, you will learn to answer concrete questions using mathematical methods and algorithms.

Nanosciences

Nanotech is found in a wide variety of products. In a nanosciences degree programme, you learn to produce, analyse, and apply functional structures and dimensions of a maximum size of 100 nanometres.

Neurosciences

Courses of study in the neurosciences focus on the brain and other nervous systems and how they work. Neuroscientists aim to develop new treatments for neurological diseases on a scientific, medical, and psychological basis.

Nutritional Sciences

The nutritional sciences deal with diets and nutrition and their effects on the human body. You will examine the interactions between the human metabolism, certain foodstuffs, and individual health.

Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Engineering

Degree programmes in pharmacy deal with medicines, their manufacture, and testing. Receiving a degree in pharmacy from a higher education institution is required to work as a pharmacist in Germany.

Physics, Astronomy

Physics is an essential science that deals with the laws of nature, from elementary particles to the universe. In a physics programme, you explore scientific laws experimentally and theoretically.

Requirements and prospects

To pursue a course of study in mathematics or the natural sciences, you will most likely need a higher education entrance qualification, i.e., the German Abitur or an international equivalent. Most of the fields of study, in particular the classical subjects such as physics or mathematics, are only offered at universities. Some fields of study, especially interdisciplinary degree programmes in nutritional or environmental sciences, are taught at universities of applied sciences. A subject-specific higher education entrance qualification is sufficient for these subjects. Some fields of study may have additional requirements such as minimum grade averages.
If you are interested in studying any of the subjects in the field of mathematics and natural sciences, you should have a passion for the natural sciences. Curiosity and perseverance are equally important qualities to have in this field.
Graduates of the field of mathematics or the natural sciences generally have very good options on the job market. The broad-ranging scientific knowledge as well as the analytical and logical thinking skills acquired in these programmes are very much in demand.
