Annotation
The Master's degree programme in Art Science in Kassel is a broadly diversified postgraduate programme in the history and theory of art, which can be followed by a completed Bachelor's programme in Art Science or Art History. The aim of the Master's degree programme is to specialise your basic knowledge and to teach you competencies with regard to the various professional fields that are open to graduates of the course of studies of art. In addition, the Master's degree programme qualifies for a doctorate. The degree course is designed in such a way as to enable you to set an individual and autonomous focus on content. Against the background of current specialist discourses, the research fields represented by the professorships are concerned with modern art history, in particular with North German painting of the 15th and Dutch painting of the 17th century, core questions of aesthetics and art theory, as well as the development of visual art in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the theory and history of the exhibition system. Questions on strategies of art education and art criticism, cultural conditions of artistic and curatorial action, questions on artistic research and topics in the history of art history are also investigated. The Master's degree programme in Art Science is completed with a Master's thesis on a topic of your choice. In the context of project seminars, the active involvement of students in research, collaborations with other faculties of the University of Kassel or national and international institutions, in addition to a research-oriented specialising of the respective focus area, enable practical experience in particular. In addition, excursions to international exhibition venues are just as much a part of the Master's degree programme as the possibility of a stay abroad, supported by various funding or scholarship programmes of the University of Kassel. It is based at the Kunsthochschule Kassel, which promotes not only the individual support of the students in their scientific work, but also the exchange with the neighbouring courses in visual art, visual communication and product design. As a study location, Kassel offers optimal conditions for art science research with its numerous special libraries. These include, for example, the Departmental Library of the Academy of Fine Arts, the State Library and Murhard's Library of the City of Kassel with a prominent manuscript department, the documenta Archive as a special library for art of the 20th century and contemporary art, and the Wilhelmshöher Museum Library. The attractiveness of the location is complemented by the third-largest museum density in Germany, a lively, young art and cultural scene and the documenta, which takes place every five years, as one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art in the world and a platform for contemporary art-theoretical discourses. Part-time study is quite possible due to the course of study in this degree course. Upon request, you can register for part-time studies in accordance with Section 19 (2) Hesse Higher Education Act (HessHG). The specific provisions for part-time studies will then apply. Counselling by the subject-specific student advice service is recommended.
