Target group
The Master’s degree course Geosciences is designed for a two-year study period. During the first two semesters, it is distinguished by its extensive range of options to be selected from the five research and teaching courses offered by the Department of Geosciences, namely mineralogy, geodynamics, applied geosciences, biogeology and exploration. Due to the broad range of subjects offered and the resulting variety of options, the course curriculum can be customised to fit the individual interests and preferences of the students. Course contents The research-oriented Master’s degree course is intended to enable students to familiarise themselves with top-level research at both the national and international levels in the field of classical basic sciences as well as applied geodisciplines. Academic profile The geosciences in Tübingen carry out environmental research, predominantly in the terrestrial sector, focusing on modern (bio-)geochemical analysis and phase analysis as well as complex spatial-related modelling. The aim is to develop future perspectives of relevance to society as a whole, in particular by combining basic and application-oriented human-environmental research. Thus, the Tübingen geosciences provide the basics, concepts and instruments for integrated georesources management. The key research areas in Tübingen are soil, water, raw materials, evolution, dynamics of the earth, models/forecasts and climate. This shapes and informs the mission statement of the Department of Environment and Georesources. Special options The Tübingen location, given the diversity of geosciences (geomicrobiology, geophysics, hydrogeochemistry, sedimentology, environmental minerals, environmental physics, environmental analysis, applied mineralogy, experimental mineralogy, geology and geodynamics, petrology, isotopic geochemistry, structural geology, invertebrate palaeontology and biogeology , vertebrate palaeontology, terrestrial paleoclimatology, micropalaeontology), is the right choice to get to know the whole range of geosciences. Intensive cooperation between numerous working groups and the industry and other international institutes and universities enables the students to start their professional life successfully, as they establish valuable contacts with potential employers during their studies. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Tübingen is one of the largest and most varied geo departments in Germany. With over 20 working groups, almost every geoscientific discipline is represented in research and teaching in Tübingen. In addition to a very broad education, this guarantees very good personal support for the students, who can directly address the teachers with questions and problems. They are not an anonymous crowd! For research and teaching, the most modern analytical methods as well as powerful labs supervised by an experienced technical team are available.
