Studying in Zwickau

Zwickau offers you 6 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

If you are looking for a small but fine higher education institution that offers an almost cosy environment – and which is also situated in the middle of a historical and lively city – then Zwickau is exactly the place for you. The "little big city" is known for its lovingly restored old town, the cafés and pubs and lots of green spaces. And all this at a very reasonable cost of living.

With about 90,000 inhabitants, Zwickau is a cosy place to study in. And with almost 3,000 enrolled students, the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau also offers a comfortable size where you can quickly meet new people and get in touch with your lecturers. The eight departments offer degree programmes in engineering, economics and social sciences, all under the motto "University for Mobility" – no wonder, since Zwickau is known as the automotive city. Vehicles have been developed and built here since 1904. The East German cult car Trabant was produced in Zwickau and even though the last vehicle rolled off the production line in Zwickau in 1991, the car still has a loyal fan base. Nowadays, it’s mostly electric cars being built in Zwickau.

Your studies’ focus will be on applied sciences and especially in the automotive sector you can benefit from a strong network of companies offering internship positions or partnering on theses. This way you will be optimally prepared to start your career.

Schwanenteich Park: the perfect spot to relax close to the city centre.

The Trabant and classic east German cars meeting is held annually in Zwickau – cars with cult status!

Zwickau's city architecture offers a charming contrast to the modern industry in town: Zwickau is well-known for its historic old town and the lovingly restored Art Nouveau and Wilhelminian style buildings. Be sure to take a look at the 13th century priests' houses (they look tiny next to the mighty St. Mary's Cathedral) or the brick building of the Johannisbad, a unique architectural gem. Classical music also plays a big role in town, as Zwickau is the birthplace of the Romantic composer Robert Schumann.

A perk of living in Zwickau are the low costs; the city is quite cheap compared to other student cities in Germany. Especially in terms of rent, you can find some really cheap places, which you simply won't get in larger German cities or popular student towns! Depending on which degree programme you choose, you will study directly at one of the two campuses in Zwickau, in Schneeberg, Reichenbach or Markneukirchen. Although you can try to move as close as possible to the campuses, the city is generally so small that everything is easily accessible by bike.

If you want to go out with friends, you can also expect a lower bill – but of course you don't have quite as many places to choose from. However, there are pubs, bars and clubs and three really active student clubs where you can party at very reasonable prices.

You don't have far to go to relax and decompress. Close to Zwickau’s centre is the MuldeParadies, a green oasis built on the tunnel of a major road. Here you will also find the Paradise Bridge, which has become a landmark of the city. Or you can go to the Schwanenteich, where you'll find wide meadows and can relax and gaze out over the expanse of water. If you feel like exercising a little, you can go cycling or jogging here. The Erzgebirge mountain range is only 30 minutes away and offers great natural landscapes, mossy forests and lots of snow in winter. Going to a larger city is also simple, just take the train to Leipzig or Dresden.
