Studying in Worms

Worms offers you 7 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

Worms has about 85,000 inhabitants and is located in the southeast of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is not only considered the capital of the Nibelungen saga with numerous sights and historic buildings – first and foremost the famous imperial cathedral. Worms is also known as a wine town with many vineyards to explore. Students, however, are perhaps more swayed by the modern campus.

Enjoyment and joie de vivre are synonymous with the Rheinhessen region! Worms is no exception. The city may be best known as the historical capital of the Nibelungs, but Worms is also a festival city! Every summer, the jazz festival Jazz & Joy takes place, a meeting place for jazz fans and music lovers. Then there is the Backfischfest, possibly one of the largest folk and wine festivals on the Rhine, and of course the annual Nibelungs Festival – much of this city revolves around the Nibelungs.

The Nibelungenlied (Song of the Nibelungs) is the most famous heroic epic in Middle High German literature and was written down around 1200. A large part of the saga, which today is part of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage, is said to have taken place in Worms. This is why the Hagen monument, among other things, is a reminder of the city's close ties to the epic. Hagen von Tronje, one of the tragic protagonists of the saga, is said to have stolen the legendary treasure of the Nibelungs and sunk it in the Rhine. His monument stands directly on the Rhine promenade.

Incidentally, the Rhine promenade is a lovely place for a walk along the water. You can peacefully watch the big Rhine barges ploughing through the river, or stop off at the beach bar, for example. Unfortunately, you can't swim in the Rhine because the current is too strong. But for swimming you can cycle to the Herrnsheim bathing lake.

Right in the middle of town: From Obermarkt square you can reach all the sights of the city.

Martin Luther's appearance at the Diet of Worms in 1521 had a lasting impact on Christianity.

There is only one higher education institution in Worms, the Hochschule Worms University of Applied Sciences. It has around 3,500 students in the three departments of computer science, tourism/transport and economics. The university of applied sciences is committed to consistently focus on practical applications and this also includes the fact that almost all degree programmes can be studied as dual study programmes. This allows you to gain professional experience and earn a salary during your studies. Especially here, located right between the economically strong Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and the Rhine-Main area, you can find interesting company partners.

Due to the size of the city and the university of applied sciences, Worms is not a traditional student city and everything is a bit more relaxed. You certainly can't expect a vibrant nightlife like in big cities, but the AStA, the student organisation, arranges parties, sports activities and other events where you can quickly meet new people. The advantage of the rather small university of applied sciences is the excellent supervision ratio, which creates a very personal atmosphere with the lecturers and staff.

In Worms, you’ll find everything you need. Between the train station and the Römischer Kaiser, Martinspforte and the cathedral, you'll find plenty of shops to stroll around or you can take a break and chat in one of the cafés. And the area around the city is perfect if you want to be active. In the flat Rhine valley with its gently sloping vineyards, you can go at your own pace – cycling or hiking, you will find numerous signposted routes in the sunny landscape of southern Rheinhessen. Especially in summer and autumn, excursions into the surrounding area are worthwhile, as the many vineyards are particularly pretty at that time of year and you will always find nice places to stop for a bite to eat. If you prefer to get active directly before/after a lecture, you can also go to the Karl-Bittel-Park/Pfrimmpark near the university of applied sciences and go for a run there.
