Studying in Weingarten

Weingarten offers you 5 degree programmes in English at 2 higher education institutions.

A place to stay in motion! Breath-taking nature awaits you in Weingarten and its surroundings: varied pilgrimage routes, recreational areas, Lake Constance and the Alps. But in the city, there is also much to explore like traditional events, cultural offerings or student parties. And if you want to immerse yourself in the world of games, the city of Ravensburg, famous for board games, is right next door.

With just over 25,000 inhabitants, Weingarten is a cosy town in the south of Germany that can offer you a home away from home. You will quickly find your way around the city and the distances are so short that you can easily reach everything on foot or by bike. There are two higher education institutions in the city, the Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences, which offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in the fields of technology, economics and social work, and the University of Education, which offers academic degree programmes for educational professions.

If you want to meet new people quickly, drop by the student pubs – but beware, they are probably closed at weekends. This may be unexpected, but student life actually takes place more during the week, as many of the German students go home at the weekend. Nevertheless, there are exciting cultural opportunities, and what's really handy is that at theatre or concert events organised by municipal providers, you can get leftover tickets for 3 euros at the box office with your student ID. Just say "Last Call for Culture"!

You'll also be able to make friends quickly at the sports activities organised by the higher education institutions. In Weingarten, the University of Education arranges sports for both institutions; even if you don't study here, you can get information and register on their website.

Student flats in Weingarten and the surrounding area are in high demand, so it can be a little more difficult to find cheap accommodation or a nice room in a shared flat. It's best to find out early on whether the International Office at your higher education institution can help you with this.

A tip: You can spend some time relaxing at Münsterplatz in the middle of the city.

At nearby Waldburg Castle, you can enjoy the view from the tower or marvel at medieval tournaments.

Weingarten has a picturesque old city centre with the baroque basilica towering over it, visible from afar. Even if you don't want to visit the basilica as a spiritual place, it is a lovely place to watch the sunset on a summer evening. Surrounded by an impressive monastery complex on the Martinsberg, the most precious treasure kept in the church is the Holy Blood relic, which has also made Weingarten famous as a place of pilgrimage. Once a year, on the day after Ascension Day, this relic is carried through the meadows and fields in an impressive procession with thousands of horsemen. Don't miss it, many guests flock to Weingarten for this.

Weingarten and its surroundings also have a lot to offer to fans of nature. Whether you want to be sporty or more leisurely, you will find suitable cycling and hiking routes for every level in the gently hilly surroundings. Something very special is the Jakobusweg (St. James' Way), which follows the trail of medieval pilgrims and perhaps lets you discover the region from a new perspective.

Just outside the city is the Stille Bach (the Quiet Brook), an extensive canal system that was built in the Middle Ages to supply the monastery with water. Today, stroll along the canals and ponds or stop off in one of the beer gardens. Give one of the regional specialities a try, e.g. Flädlesuppe (broth with pancakes cut into strips).

Another destination is Ravensburg, known as the "city of towers and gates". If you climb one of the towers, such as the Blaserturm or the Mehlsack, you can see as far as Lake Constance and the Alps on a good day.
