Studying in Weimar

Weimar offers you 7 degree programmes in English at 2 higher education institutions.

Weimar may be a small town but it’s rich with culture and history. With the higher education institutions not far from the city centre, everything is at your fingertips, whether it’s the museums, theatres, pubs or cafés. Take a walk through the park on the Ilm River or visit the houses of Goethe and Schiller, both former residents of Weimar. This town is full of surprises.

If studying in a big city is not what you picture for yourself, then picking Weimar can give you that more tranquil atmosphere that you are seeking. This town of just under 66,000 punches above its weight when it comes to culture and historical significance. The constitution of Germany's first democracy was adopted here, which is the reason why the period is named Weimar Republic.

Another famous cultural connection to Weimar (besides the two giant German cultural figures previously mentioned – Goethe and Schiller), is the influential Bauhaus design school. Existing from 1919 to 1925 in Weimar, the school had a considerable sway on advances in art, architecture, graphic design and more! Nowadays, not only can you visit the Bauhaus Museum, but also study at Bauhaus-Universität, which is one of two higher education institutions located in Weimar. The other study option is the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, which offers a variety of degree programmes in music studies.

Weimar is located between Jena and Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia; both offer different opportunities when you want to explore outside of town. But Weimar is not short of entertainment options as there are numerous bars, restaurants, parks and museums.

In summer, Weimar offers concerts, street festivals and more!

Buchenwald concentration camp is a dark but important part of the history of Germany. A bus line will take you directly there.

Weimar is a quiet town and with less than 5,000 students you can expect intimate experiences both in and outside the classroom. Housing won’t be as competitive or as expensive as in other cities and you’ll also find living expenses are much more affordable. Everything is within walking distance, and using a bicycle will make those trips even faster. Finding cosy cafes to read or study in will be easy as you stroll through the charming streets and alleyways of Weimar. If you prefer a park to relax in, then make your way to the Park on the Ilm. This 48-hectare green space offers enough space for picnics, and numerous interesting monuments and historic sites.

Despite the relatively low number of students, activities and events are still abundant. The M18 student house is the most popular meeting point for students in Weimar. It offers a place to network, drink coffee, or study. It also offers space for meetings. You’ll be able to hear about any small concerts, readings, and other cultural events happening around Weimar.

Numerous fests also take place during the year in Weimar. You’ll be able to attend the Easter Market during Easter time, a Christmas market during Christmas time, and, in the summer, a wine fest that is the focal point of Weimar’s Goethe birthday celebrations. One of the more unique festivals in Weimar is GENIUS LOCI. Once a year, artists will light up different buildings in the city with audiovisual projections. This attracts more than 50,000 visitors a year. As you can see, Weimar has plenty to offer for any prospective student.
