Studying in Tübingen

Tübingen offers you 31 degree programmes in English at 2 higher education institutions.

Tübingen is one of the most beautiful and traditional university towns in southern Germany. The cityscape is characterised by colourful, narrow houses sitting along the Neckar River, the medieval town centre and narrow alleys which attract tourists and students alike. The students also make the city statistically one of the youngest in Germany – which means there’s always something happening.

The two local higher education institutions could not be more different. While the University of Tübingen covers a very broad range of subjects with around 200 degree programmes and has approx. 28,500 students, the University for Church Music (Hochschule für Kirchenmusik der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Württemberg) is very small and highly specialised with around 20 students. As a university rich in tradition and known for its top-level research, the University of Tübingen also attracts many international students. Together, the students create a particularly young and international attitude to life in this Swabian city, which contrasts harmoniously with the lovingly restored medieval town centre.

In the picturesque old town, you will not only find lively or cosy cafés and bars, you can also go shopping. The shops, galleries and specialist stores have everything you need – and not in a faceless shopping centre somewhere outside of town, but right in the middle of the historic half-timbered setting. That makes a leisurely shopping trip even more fun!

Since Tübingen is very popular with students, it can be difficult to find a flat or room in the city at the beginning of the semester. The best thing to do is to ask your higher education institution if there are any support services available.

Whether a punt boat or SUP: on the Neckar River you can see the city’s most beautiful views.

The old town is the place to go when you want to go out and party at night.

The buildings of the higher education institutions are spread all over the city. But the distances are short and easy to cover on foot, by bike or by bus. Between lectures, you can take a relaxed break on one of the bridges over the Neckar and enjoy the famous view of the row of historic houses, some of which were built directly onto the city walls along the river. In the middle of Tübingen is the Neckar Island, which is especially beautiful in summer and autumn when you can relax in the shade of the plane tree avenue. On the river you will also find the Stocherkähne, a kind of Swabian version of the Venetian gondolas. Use them to float down the river during sunny days.

One of the city's historic buildings is the town hall, which is considered one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany and was built in the 16th century. It is located on the market square, which is a popular meeting place. Market day is held here three times a week, where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables. Local delicacies in Swabia include Maultaschen and Spätzle, which you can get at the market directly from regional producers (of course, you can also find them in the supermarket, or they are offered in the student cafeteria).

After the hustle and bustle of the old town, you might be looking for a quiet place to relax. The Botanical Garden is strictly speaking an institution of the University of Tübingen and is used for teaching and research, but it is also open to the public free of charge every day of the year – so you can stroll along the beautifully laid out paths, discover flowering paradises and rare trees or lush tropical plants in the greenhouses. From here enjoy a wonderful view of the green mountain ranges of the Swabian Alb and the Hohenzollern. You can go hiking or cycling or trek through the snow in winter. What you shouldn't miss in winter is the Christmas market in Tübingen. The decorated stalls and stands bring a very special atmosphere to the old town.
