Studying in Stralsund

Stralsund offers you 6 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

Do you favour seagulls over buzzing city sounds? If so, Stralsund is a perfect choice for you. Although the city is considered calm and relaxed, your student life will not be, however, as many restaurants, bars and fun sports activities such as riding a dragon boat will accompany your daily life here. And the university of applied sciences campus makes it easy to meet students from various backgrounds.

Stralsund is shaped by its location on the water. Situated directly on the Baltic Sea, the city is surrounded by the most beautiful beaches. The islands of Rügen, Hiddensee and Usedom are not far away. And inland, you can enjoy nature at many lakes, meadows and forests. Great for active and relaxing trips!

Stralsund, therefore, attracts many guests, on land and on water. Together with the students, they bring fresh life to the almost 800-year-old port city. In the historic old town, you will find cafés, bars and restaurants – the city marketing department advertises the best fish sandwich in the world! After a strenuous lecture, go shopping in the city centre or walk directly from the campus down to the sea, where the wide sandy beach awaits you. Here you can take a relaxed walk, let the wind flow through your hair and recharge your batteries.

As one would expect, water sports are very important. There's a higher education watersports club where you can learn to sail and prepare for recreational boating licences. And if you're really tough, you can swim in the icy “Sund” in winter! But of course, there are also normal sports like yoga, volleyball, weight training, etc.

Not just the sea, the city’s architecture is also worth seeing.

Stralsund was not always German, as it belonged to Sweden for almost 200 years.

Stralsund is not super lively in the evenings, but finding a place to party with your fellow students will not be difficult. You should be able to make friends quickly. There is only one higher education institution in Stralsund, the Stralsund University of Applied Sciences. It is a young campus university with about 2,400 students. Research and teaching follow a technical and economic profile and courses are offered in electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and economics. The comparatively low number of students allows for a personal relationship with faculty and staff. If you are afraid of being lost in anonymity at a large higher education institution and are looking for a relaxed atmosphere, this is the place for you.

Rent in Stralsund is absolutely affordable. Whether you want your first flat of your own or prefer to live in a shared flat or student hall of residence, the real estate market isn’t tight and you will definitely find what you are looking for. The Holzhausen halls of residence directly on campus are very charming. Only a few steps away from the student cafeteria and the lecture halls, it is modelled on a small Scandinavian village. However, since capacities are limited, you should apply early.

If you want to experience the city's culture, don't miss the many festivals. For the Harbour Days (Hafentage) in summer, music stages are set up on the Sundpromenade, carousels and some small stalls. The Wallenstein Days are completely different, commemorating the city's successful resistance to a siege in 1628, complete with period costumes and cannon thunder.

You can see the city's long history everywhere. Visible from afar are the three large brick churches that shape the silhouette of the city. (A tip: Stralsund is at its most beautiful from the water). But the magnificent medieval gabled houses of the rich merchants and, of course, the façade of the old town hall also characterise the historic streets of the city and invite you to stroll and marvel.
