Studying in Saarbrücken

Saarbrücken offers you 30 degree programmes in English at 6 higher education institutions.

In Saarbrücken, the capital of Germany’s smallest federal state, you will notice how important good food is for the people in the region. In the city centre and the student-oriented Nauwieser Viertel you will find a rich choice of restaurants and pubs. Additionally, distances are walkable, rents are quite low, France is just a stone’s throw away and the city is very green: These are among the many good reasons to study in Saarbrücken.

Saarbrücken has a dynamic history: Where the Romans and Celts once lived, there are now almost 200,000 inhabitants, and the historic buildings from various eras today house quaint cafés and creative boutiques. The city is also very international. Far more than 100 nations are represented here, which leave a clear mark on Saarbrücken: Life is colourful and diverse, and the people are cosmopolitan and warm-hearted.

France has a very special influence on the culture and lifestyle of the city: everyday life in Saarbrücken is lived according to the motto "savoir-vivre". Loosely translated, this means the art of enjoying life. And what would enjoyment of life be without local delicacies? In Saarbrücken, you can immerse yourself in the world of culinary delights. The first - and often cheap - place to go is the numerous farmers markets. Here, regional products are sold, and you can certainly get a few recipes or good cooking tips that you can try out right away at the next cooking evening with friends. The local dish "Dibbelabbes" is particularly recommended: the potato dish, refined with spices, is especially suitable for hungry students after a long day in the library.

Saarbrücken gets many hours of sunshine. Come and enjoy them in the cafés!

The Völklinger Hütte, a completely preserved ironworks, was the first ever industrial UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Saarbrücken's cultural diversity is clear to see: there is always something going on and you have plenty of options to choose from for your free time. You can go to numerous concerts, dance and theatre performances or a wide variety of exhibitions. Interesting discussions or workshops on different topics are also often offered. Especially in the warmer months, you can look forward to the big events and festivals here! The festivals are as colourful as the city itself: You can experience up-and-coming talent and film premieres up close at the Max Ophüls Film Festival, get to know German-French stage art or simply dance your heart out at one of the big concerts.

By the way, Saarbrücken has above-average sunshine hours for Germany - perfect for taking a break in the many naturally landscaped parks right in the city. For example, you can watch swans and wild geese in the German-French Garden, take pedal boats out on the pond, listen to the water organ or simply enjoy the scent of the wildflowers. Or you head to Bürgerpark Hafeninsel for a walk and recharge your batteries against the charming background of former industrial spaces.

The place-to-be in Saarbrücken is the Staden, a park with a beer garden directly on the Saar. Many students meet here, especially on warm days, to relax after classes and enjoy a cold drink at sunset. The spacious green areas are used for barbecues, parties and especially for laughing.

But Saarbrücken is not only very green within the city, but also around it. Did you know that there is a primeval forest right at the gates of Saarbrücken? This is a project to leave the nature reserve largely wild and without human influence. Numerous hiking and themed routes lead you along winding paths and past rare flora and fauna.
