Studying in Rostock

Rostock offers you 21 degree programmes in English at 6 higher education institutions.

The old Hanse and harbour city of Rostock perfectly combines big-city life with the peace of the Baltic Sea. One minute, you are in a lively student neighbourhood and meet up with friends at the city port and then the next minute, you grab your bike or take a train to go to Warnemünde beach where you can relax or take a refreshing swim in the Baltic Sea. In Rostock, you can study where others go on holiday!

Rostock is a typical northern German Hanseatic city: people greet each other with "Moin" or "Moin Moin" and brick houses, including some gabled houses, characterise the city centre and add to the Hanseatic flair.

Hanseatic flair without water – unthinkable! The Warnow River flows directly through Rostock, offering recreational opportunities both on the water and on the banks. You can be active on a stand-up paddle board or a kayak, or cruise leisurely on the river in pedal boats with your friends. On the shore, you can enjoy nature in the IGA Park or visit the historic ship of the Rostock Maritime Museum. The city harbour near the city centre, on the other hand, is dominated by urban flair: young people meet up for a barbecue on the quayside, play a game of Kubb (a Scandinavian lawn game) or enjoy a cool drink in a bar. And all this against the backdrop of a ship or two and some harbour cranes.

If you follow the Warnow out of town, you will end up directly on the Baltic Sea in the Warnemünde district with its famous lighthouse, the seal research centre, and, of course, the widest sandy beach in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

No German city has more fountains than Rostock and the "Fountain of the Joy of Life" on Universitätsplatz is a popular meeting place.

More than 200,000 people live in Rostock – that makes Rostock the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and gives it a big-city-feel. As you would expect in a large city, you will find a wide variety of neighbourhoods. The most popular with students is the Kröpeliner Tor Vorstadt, popularly known as KTV, which borders directly on the city centre. The KTV can definitely be called a trendy district: The carefully renovated old buildings are home to numerous restaurants, pubs and bars as well as small independent shops. There is also the Volkstheater and several cinemas, as well as a regular KTV festival.

Although the rental market in Rostock is not too tense with below-average rents, you may not be able to find a room in the KTV. Don't worry, other parts of the city also have their charms: In Gehlsdorf, for example, you can live quietly in the countryside and still reach the city centre quickly by ferry. And Südstadt is quite affordable, plus there are some departments of the University of Rostock located here. So, it might not be that impractical to live there. And you can eat well and cheaply here, too. After all, the student cafeteria there is considered one of the best in Germany. The University of Music and Theatre, on the other hand, is in the city centre.

Rostock's seaside location offers unique leisure experiences, especially in summer. In addition to Warnemünde, other Baltic Sea beaches are within easy reach, as is the Bodden, which you can reach by car in about 45 minutes. The Bodden is a unique body of water, neither a sea nor an inland lake. Its water is shallow and, since it is now largely cut off from the sea, only slightly salty. You will find unique flora and fauna here. In Rostock itself, you can marvel at the historic sailing boats, the ferries and cruise ships at the HanseSail every August and enjoy the accompanying cultural and entertainment programme.
