Studying in Reutlingen

Reutlingen offers you 3 degree programmes in English at 3 higher education institutions.

Reutlingen is a prime example of the Swabian idyll! The city is nestled in the UNESCO biosphere reserve Swabian Alb which invites inhabitants and visitors to hike and cycle. And between the city’s half-timbered houses, old city walls and small alleys you can enjoy a cozy atmosphere. At the same time, the city is continuously growing, lively, prosperous and an attractive place to live, study and work.

To enjoy the best panoramic view, you should definitely take a walk up to the Achalm. Achalm is Reutlingen's local peak at an altitude of 707 metres, with a castle ruin up on top, which, along with St. Mary's Church and the Tübingen Gate, is one of the most important landmarks of the city. From up there you have a magnificent view of the city and the Swabian Alb, the landscape around Reutlingen.

Get your strength back after this hike and enjoy typical Swabian specialties such as filled pasta dumplings, called Maultaschen. True Reutlingen originals, however, are Mutscheln (star-shaped, crumbly yeast pastry) or Schiedwecken (meat pie).

Reutlingen reveals its beauty not just from above but also by the water. More than 30 rivers and brooks flow through the city, the most famous of which is certainly the Neckar. Here you can rent a canoe or kayak and spend a few hours in nature in a relaxed (or active) way. The riverside path along the Echaz is also an oasis of peace - and still close to the city centre.

In addition to modern architecture, you will also find medieval half-timbered houses.

In Reutlingen, you can squeeze through the narrowest street in the world, the Spreuerhofstraße. It is only 31 cm wide at its narrowest point.

The city with its approximately 115,000 inhabitants is a location for modern service providers and industry. Today, the most important sectors are electrical engineering and electronics, mechanical engineering and automation, trade, logistics and services. Traditionally, however, the textile industry was the most important sector in the city and even today Reutlingen still innovates in this area: in 2023 the Texoversum was inaugurated. This is not only a new architectural landmark for the city but also hoped to push for innovative ideas. Behind the futuristic complex in the shape of a honeycomb made of carbon and glass fibres are workshops, laboratories and think-tank areas for the textile industry, where trainees, students, investors, founders and researchers can come together. Innovations for technology sectors such as automotive, aerospace, IT or medical technology are also to spring from here.

The Texoversum is located on the campus of the largest higher education institution in town, Reutlingen University, with about 5,000 students in the fields of business, computer science, life sciences, technology, textiles and design. There is also the Reutlingen School of Theology and a campus of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Ludwigsburg, both of which have considerably fewer students. The housing market in Reutlingen is, therefore, more relaxed than in the better-known student cities in Baden-Württemberg, such as Heidelberg, Freiburg or Stuttgart. But if you would like to stay in one of the inexpensive student halls close to the campus of Reutlingen University, for example, you should still apply as quickly as possible.

Many students prefer to go out in the evening in Tübingen or Stuttgart. There are cool cocktail bars in Reutlingen, sure, but there are not many inexpensive, laid-back pubs. Still, you can spend relaxed evenings in Reutlingen, and the city presents a lot of ideas: Some bars host parties, especially for students, which are planned together with the student councils. And for one month in summer, the Reutlingen Citybeach spreads vacation vibes. The square at the Marienkirche is transformed into a beach location with sand and deckchairs.

After an intense day in lectures, you can also relax in the “Pomologie”. This used to be a training school for horticulture, but today the Pomologie is the locals' favourite park. Here you can stroll through the orchards or the rose garden and have a fantastic view of the Achalm.
