With its two higher education institutions, the Lower Saxony city of Osnabrück is a typical student city with a lively student scene. You will find cafés, clubs, cinemas, theatres, and concert venues all over. Something that suits your interest and taste will certainly be in the mix. If you are looking for some rest, the flat landscape around the city of the Peace of Westphalia is just perfect for long bicycle tours.
Osnabrück University and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences are the city’s two higher education institutions with more than 10,000 students each. Both institutions offer a comprehensive selection of degree programmes. This city is strongly shaped by the many students who attend these institutions, as the total student population is fairly large.
Osnabrück is one of the five largest cities in Lower Saxony, and conveniently situated to access both North-South and East-West highway routes. Don’t worry, you won’t need a car: Northern cities such as Hannover and Hamburg are also easily reached by train. If you’d like to travel further to go see Berlin, for example, you are able to do so via a direct train.
Even historically, the easy connections have been advantageous for the city. Between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, Osnabrück was a member of the former Hanseatic league, the most important trading alliance at the time. Later, Osnabrück importantly hosted French, German and Swedish royalty for the Peace of Westphalia agreements. The treaties ended the Thirty Years’ War and set the tone for modern international law and a peaceful Europe. Now you know why Osnabrück is called the City of Peace!
