With its two higher education institutions, the Lower Saxony city of Osnabrück is a typical student city with a lively student scene. You will find cafés, clubs, cinemas, theatres, and concert venues all over. Something that suits your interest and taste will certainly be in the mix. If you are looking for some rest: The flat landscape around the city of the Peace of Westphalia is just perfect for long bicycle tours.

The Osnabrück University and the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences are the city’s two higher education institutions with more than 13,000 students each. Both institutions offer a comprehensive selection of degree programmes. This city is strongly shaped by the many students who attend these institutions, as the total student population is fairly large.

Osnabrück is the third largest city in Lower Saxony, and conveniently situated to access both North-South and East-West highway routes. Don’t worry, you won’t need a car: Northern cities such as Hannover and Hamburg are also easily reached by train. If you’d like to travel further to go see Berlin, for example, you are able to do so via a direct high-speed train.

Osnabrück has clearly lived up to its history by being so well connected. Between the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, Osnabrück was a member of the former Hanseatic league, the most important trading alliance at the time. Later, Osnabrück importantly hosted French, German and Swedish royalty for the Peace of Westphalia agreements. The treaties ended the Thirty Years’ War and set the tone for modern international law and a peaceful Europe. Now, you know why Osnabrück is called the City of Peace!

Have you seen "All Quiet on the Western Front"? There is a museum dedicated to the original author, an Osnabrück native, as well as stories from WWI.

Having uncovered a bit of Osnabrück’s history, you’ll be sure to find some architectural markers mixed in with the since-modernised infrastructure. In the medieval old town, you’ll see many timber-framed houses just a few steps away from modern shopping centres. Yes, this area is great for a browse or window-shop after your lectures. It’s also known for its lively coffee bars with their in-house roasteries: certainly, a unique environment to share with friends.

For some culture, you all should visit the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra. It was founded in 1919 and commonly hosts concerts during the season. There are several theatres around Osnabrück. One of them, The Ostensibles, Osnabrück’s Theatre in English, is well worth a visit, so make sure you look out for productions and upcoming performances.

There are quite a few places to go; you’ll surely find comfort in knowing that Osnabrück is a compact city. It has a simple layout and distances are short, so you’ll have an easy time getting around. The public transport system in the city is very good too, although the preferred mode of transportation here seems to be the bicycle. It makes sense: Osnabrück boasts many beautiful bike paths, as it is located in the middle of a 1,220 square kilometre nature reserve, the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita. Living here will give you lots of opportunities for hiking and biking. If you’re a little more adventurous or simply want to try yourself in a new hobby, you should know that although the landscape is rather flat, Osnabrück has an established mountain biking scene!
