Studying in Offenburg

Offenburg offers you 5 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

“In no other country does the sun shine brighter and is the sky bluer than here between the Rhine and the vines!” Goethe’s words about Offenburg still apply today: The weather is often nice and next to good food you can try delicious local wines. Offenburg suits you if you are looking for a small, cosy town to study in. It also has international flair: Strasbourg and the European Parliament are only 20 km away.

Offenburg is not one of the big student cities in Germany. The single higher education institution in town, Hochschule Offenburg, has about 4,200 students across four departments: Electrical Engineering, Medical Engineering, and Informatics; Mechanical and Process Engineering; Media, and Business and Industrial Engineering. It has two campuses in both Gengenbach and Offenburg.

The small size of the Hochschule Offenburg means that you can cross crowded lecture halls off your list of experiences. You can, instead, expect individualised support which will help you fully focus on your studies. If you wish to trial a future profession, you can start networking from here, as the Hochschule Offenburg closely collaborates with regional business. The Southern Upper Rhine region is economically strong, thanks to the numerous and versatile companies across a wide range of industries. Companies in the media, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering sectors are particularly well-established. This is a great place to make the first steps into your future career.

Offenburg has a charming city centre where you can go shopping or for a stroll.

If you love to admire the traditional Black Forest hats – with pompoms – then you’ve come to the right place!

Offenburg is located in the sunny south of Germany and has about 62,000 inhabitants. The size of the city is particularly advantageous, because everything is within close reach. You can get from your accommodation to the Hochschule in just a few minutes, and even go for a quick swim in the Gifiz Lake during one of your breaks. You won’t even need a bike for most of your journeys, and the city centre is not far at all. In the city, you can shop in the pedestrian zone, stroll through the streets whilst admiring the historic buildings, and quickly find your favourite café. Offenburg is good for going out in the evenings too, as there are numerous bars and pubs with student-friendly prices. If you want more options for your nightlife, the larger cities Freiburg and Karlsruhe can be reached quickly by regional train.

The local cuisine is highly recommended: Baden is known for some delicious dishes. Try the Flädlesuppe (meat broth with pancake-strips), Badische Maultäschle in Zwiebelschmelze (a kind of ravioli with caramelised onions) or Schäufele (pork shoulder). And if you are in the mood for French cuisine and culture, Alsace is not far away: in Mulhouse you can eat tarte flambée, in Colmar you can admire the medieval old town, and in Strasbourg you can visit the European Parliament’s headquarters.

The region also has a lot of sporting to offer: hiking and mountain biking in the summer, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. It's no coincidence that the Black Forest is one of Germany's most popular vacation destinations. Luckily, you would have it right on your doorstep! If you need a special incentive to put on your hiking boots, Offenburg has a Wine Hiking Day. Every September, you can hike along the approx. 8km route, visiting one winery after the next. Here, you would taste-test different wines, whilst also enjoying the magnificent view over the Rhine valley to Strasbourg, and the Vosges Mountains.
