Studying in Kassel

Kassel offers you 12 degree programmes in English at 6 higher education institutions.

Every fifth year, Kassel turns into a mecca for art lovers: the documenta, the world’s most important exhibition for contemporary art, takes place for exactly 100 days. And no need to worry, Kassel will also not bore you in the meantime: relax in Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, Europe’s largest hillside park and UNESCO world heritage site, search for traces of ex-residents the Grimm Brothers, and meet your friends in cafés and bars.

Kassel has several higher education institutions, such as the University of Kassel and the CVJM Hochschule – University of Applied Sciences, with a joint total of more than 25,000 students. Compared to the estimated 200,000 residents that make up Kassel, the student population might seem sparsely distributed amongst all the other residents; however, most students choose to live in similar districts, closest to their respective places of learning. This provides the intimate student experience that many are after. Many enjoy life in the “Vorderer Westen” district of Kassel for its homey restaurants, cafes, and independent stores. The area is central and easily reached by public transport or even a bike, and contains the Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, a popular nightlife destination with funky bars and other similar establishments. You will also find other types of entertainment here, such as a cozy, 50’s style cinema with a versatile selection of film screenings!

Kassel is close to the geographical centre of Germany and is a central traffic hub. The city has a great transport network. Its train station accommodates the high-speed ICE trains which pass through the city daily, on many of Germany’s national routes. If you’re keen on seeing even more of Germany and Europe, Kassel is a great starting place.

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracts many visitors.

You should visit the Caricatura Museum! Great for cartoon lovers and all those who enjoy the intersection of art and humour.

If spending time in the green outdoors is your idea of a break from learning and studying, then Kassel is the place to be. The city sports a boast-worthy collection of natural attractions and historical sites: we’ve already made brief mention of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the UNESCO world heritage site in Kassel. This is not just a conventional park as it also contains the 9m tall Hercules statue, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (a museum housing valuable antiques, paintings and artefacts related to its construction), Löwenburg (the reconstructed castle ruins from the Middle Ages), botanical gardens, as well as a large greenhouse with tropical flora and fauna. It’s an enjoyable and relaxing place to visit after a long week and due to the great variety of sites contained inside the park, you will return often to take it all in.

The Karlsaue Park, close to the river Fulda, is yet another one of Kassel’s many green spaces. Just like the Bergpark, you will find botanical gardens but also be able to take guided tours or visit the scientific exhibitions in the Orangerie with your friends. On a lighter note, this park also hosts several themed festivals and events such as open-air concerts or seasonal fairs throughout the year, which are worth keeping an eye out for.

Your exploring surely won’t end in Kassel, as the city is closely associated with the German folklorists, the Brothers Grimm. You probably know their fairy tales: Cinderella, Snow White and many others (although they have changed much in the retelling and translation). Kassel is one of the stops of the so-called Märchenstraße, a themed trip that runs throughout German cities and towns most prominently featured in the stories. This tour is a great opportunity for folklore and fairy tale enthusiasts (and those who are purely nostalgic), to explore some of these places and their historical sites, retracing the steps of the brothers throughout Germany.
