Studying in Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt offers you 25 degree programmes in English at 2 higher education institutions.

The city of Ingolstadt perfectly combines Bavarian culture with modernness. Even though Ingolstadt is one of the largest cities in the state of Bavaria, strolling through the medieval city centre will make one feel more like living in a small village than a medium-sized city. Since the first-ever Bavarian university was founded in Ingolstadt in 1472, the city‘s student life has a long history.

Today there are two higher education institutions in Ingolstadt, the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt and a campus of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU). Until 1800 there was also the University of Ingolstadt – Mary Shelley's protagonist Viktor Frankenstein in her novel of the same name was enrolled at this university when he created his monster. If you enjoy getting spooked, you can take part in one of the nightly event tours to the original locations. But even without a guided tour, the city offers picturesque historical sights, as it looks back on a history of over 1,200 years. Ingolstadt is proud of the Münster and the Neue Schloss, both dating from the 15th century, as well as the Maria de Victoria Church, a Baroque masterpiece, and parts of the city's old fortifications are still intact.

If you want to get some fresh air after class and recharge your batteries in nature, the green inner-city ring Glacis or the Klenzepark are popular and make Ingolstadt one of the greenest cities in Bavaria. On the Danube beach, you can relax with a cool drink in your hand and your feet in the sand. You can also meet up with friends for a hearty snack in one of the beer gardens. After all, you are in Bavaria.

Medieval buildings and strong industry: Ingolstadt boasts both.

In 1516, the Bavarian beer purity regulation (Reinheitsgebot) was passed in Ingolstadt which forms the basis for the good reputation of Bavarian beer to this day.

Bavaria is one of the most prosperous federal states in Germany and Ingolstadt in particular stands out for its economic strength. The driving force is the automotive industry. Ingolstadt is not only home to one of Germany's major car manufacturers, but also to many suppliers and development partners. With its central location in Bavaria and its well-developed infrastructure, Ingolstadt has clear advantages as a business location, so other world-famous companies have decided to settle here, giving the city a comparably low unemployment rate. These are good opportunities for you to find an interesting partner company for your thesis or an exciting internship.

Studying isn’t just working, of course, and in Ingolstadt you're lucky to have a thriving cultural scene and nightlife. Whether it's the annual Audi Summer Concerts or Jazz Days, theatre, readings or a large number of restaurants, clubs and pubs, you'll find plenty of opportunities to relax after your classes. Practically all locations are within easy walking distance, as Ingolstadt offers a lot in a small space. Nevertheless, a bike can come in handy. There are regular bike flea markets where you can get a second-hand bike at a reasonable price. Ingolstadt also has a good bus network and students can get a reduced Deutschlandticket which is valid for regional transport in all of Germany.

With a bike you can also discover a lot in the surrounding area: bathing lakes for summer days, cycling or hiking in the Altmühltal or a tour through the Hallertau in the south of the city, the largest hop-growing area in the world. If you fancy a breath of big city air, Munich and Nuremberg are not far away and easy to reach by train. All of this makes Ingolstadt a very liveable city for students, so finding a flat can be difficult – you should plan to expend some time on your search and budget accordingly.
