The city of Ingolstadt perfectly combines Bavarian culture with modernness. Even though Ingolstadt is the fifth largest city in the state of Bavaria, strolling through the medieval city centre will make one feel more like living in a small village than a medium-sized city. Since the first-ever Bavarian university was founded in Ingolstadt in 1472, the city‘s student life has a long history.
Today there are two higher education institutions in Ingolstadt, the Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt and a campus of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU). Until 1800 there was also the University of Ingolstadt – Mary Shelley's protagonist Viktor Frankenstein in her novel of the same name was enrolled at this university when he created his monster. If you enjoy getting spooked, you can take part in one of the nightly event tours to the original locations. But even without a guided tour, the city offers picturesque historical sights, as it looks back on a history of over 1,200 years. Ingolstadt is proud of the Münster and the Neue Schloss, both dating from the 15th century, as well as the Maria de Victoria Church, a Baroque masterpiece, and parts of the city's old fortifications are still intact.
If you want to get some fresh air after class and recharge your batteries in nature, the green inner-city ring Glacis or the Klenzepark are popular and make Ingolstadt one of the greenest cities in Bavaria. On the Danube beach, you can relax with a cool drink in your hand and your feet in the sand. You can also meet up with friends for a hearty snack in one of the beer gardens. After all, you are in Bavaria.
