Studying in Hannover

Hannover offers you 24 degree programmes in English at 12 higher education institutions.

The state capital Hanover has a lot to offer and yet is often underrated. You will not find a pretty old town here, but other pleasant things: Go for a walk in Europe’s largest city forest, let yourself be taken back in time in the Herrenhäuser Gärten, stroll through the hip Linden district or admire the Wilhelmian style houses in List. Hanover has many treasures waiting to be discovered by you.

Hanover is an important traffic hub in Germany. Here you are not only well connected to the rest of the world in terms of transport but also economically: Hanover is an international trade fair location, which is why many different companies have settled here. If you like, you can quickly find opportunities to gain your first professional experience alongside studying here.

The city has a total population of around 550,000. About 10 percent of them study at the city's various higher education institutions. In addition to larger institutions with a broad spectrum of degree courses, Hanover also has specialised higher education institutions with a focus on subjects such as business, medicine, veterinary medicine or music. Although the campuses are spread throughout the city, public transport is very well developed, so you can get from A to B quickly and easily, both for your classes and for leisure activities. It’s also easy to get around on a bike in Hanover!

By the way: Would you like to get involved in student groups and initiatives? For example, you can sing in a choir, play in a band, organise readings or be active in a theatre group. And cultural student groups are even financially supported by the Studierendenwerk Hannover.

The Maschsee Festival: an experience both during the day and in the evening!

In general, the German spoken in Hanover is considered the "best High German".

Most people might not picture culinary specialities when they think of Hanover, but there are plenty to find here! Do you know dishes – some of them are typically North German – such as Grünkohl mit Pinkel (kale with sausage), Hochzeitssuppe (a brothy soup), Calenberger Pfannenschlag (a heavily spiced sausage) or Welfenspeise (a tasty dessert)? Behind the peculiar names are delicacies that you can find at restaurants or cafes and taste your way through with friends after a day in class. Neighbourhoods such as Nordstadt, Linden or Calenberger Neustadt are particularly popular for this kind of cosy evening. By the way, there are also numerous pubs, clubs and bars here and there is always something going on in the evenings!

In the summer months, Hanover turns up the dial. That's when open-air jazz festivals, street food festivals and dragon boat festivals take place! Many of the events can easily be attended between your courses or in the evening directly after class - the locations are close to the higher education institutions and let you stroll and linger. The many events in the Herrenhäuser Gärten Park are particularly popular for this. Events such as the "Small Festival in the Great Garden", the KunstFestSpiele (art festival), the world's largest Schützenfest (traditional marksmen festival) or the international fireworks competition take place here. You can admire comedies, acrobatics or dance with your friends, go on rides and party in the festival tents.

The quality of life in Hanover is very high due to the many gardens and green spaces. It's not for nothing that Hanover is also called the "City of Gardens". Whether you join fellow students in the Großer Garten, jog along Maschsee Lake or take a relaxing walk in the huge Eilenriede city forest, there are plenty of opportunities to escape into nature. There is even a public beach at the Maschsee, where that holiday feeling is attainable on warm days: here you can row, sail and swim in the middle of the city!
