Halle has a charming town centre, with many narrow streets lined by buildings from different eras and a lot of cultural institutions such as museums or theatres. But nature is not missing either: Halle has many green parks and along the river Saale students can find cosy spots to relax. Low rents, walkable distances and an independent club and bar scene make Halle an attractive place to study.

The cultural capital of Saxony-Anhalt has a population of around 240,000 and is one of the largest cities in eastern Germany. More than 22,000 students create a dynamic and lively atmosphere in Halle.

There are three higher education institutions in Halle: the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design and the Protestant University of Church Music. No matter which institution you choose, all three have beautiful facilities and libraries spread throughout the city. Important research institutes and non-university institutions of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft are also located in town.

The most popular districts among students include the charming old town with its winding alleys, the chic city centre with its numerous leisure facilities and the artistic Paulusviertel. Students in Halle particularly appreciate the walkable distances: you can easily reach your lectures and leisure activities on foot, by bike or by public transport. Rents for flats and shared flats in Halle are below the German average. Here you will find beautiful and affordable accommodation, close to the centre or convenient to the higher education institutions. The Universitätsplatz is a popular location for many students.

The birthplace of the famous composer George Frideric Handel offers an exciting mix of old and new.

Do you like visiting new art exhibitions and exciting theatre performances? Halle has many galleries and museums just waiting for you to discover them. You can find cultural and entertaining events in the theatre, the opera house or in one of the cinemas. The hip city on the Saale also hosts a variety of festivals every year. These include the world-famous Handel Festival, the colourful Lantern Festival and the Salt Festival, which commemorates the city's successful salt trade in the Middle Ages.

The city's main attractions include the home where George Frideric Handel was born and Giebichenstein Castle, which is also the campus of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design. From up here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. In summer, the castle becomes a popular meeting place among students, as open-air festivals and concerts are often held here. At the market square, you will find the city's landmark: the 84-metre-high Red Tower, which you can also climb. There is a large market in the square almost every day, selling fresh food.

With its idyllic parks and gardens, Halle is one of the greenest cities in Germany. Especially in summer, you can relax in nature. After a long day, unwind, barbecue and sunbathe on Peißnitzinsel, Riveufer and Rabeninsel. On particularly hot days, swim in the Hufeisensee or in one of the many other lakes near the city.

The neighbouring city of Leipzig offers an exuberant nightlife and can be reached quickly by train. In Halle itself you will also find varied evening options in the independent pub scene and in some clubs. Kleine Ulrichstraße in particular is known for its bars and outdoor seating, where you can enjoy warm summer evenings.
