Studying in Geislingen

Geislingen offers you 1 degree programme in English at 1 higher education institution.

Geislingen an der Steige is a small, lesser-known town in southern Germany that just beckons to be explored. You will discover a lot of wonderful places such as the park next to the university of applied sciences or little markets in the streets. And for nature enthusiasts: As the city is in a merger zone of five valleys, there are many great hiking routes nearby – a great equalizer for stressful days of studying.

With around 30,000 inhabitants, Geislingen is small and cosy. The advantage: The buildings where your lectures take place are close to each other and the halls of residence are also within walking distance. Compared to many other student towns in Germany, rents are usually affordable, and you can find a room or flat even if you don't have a place in a hall of residence.

Due to the number of students, there is no campus dining hall in Geislingen – instead, students are allowed to use the cafeteria of a local company whose food has won several awards. The kitchen staff uses organic products sourced regionally as much as possible, and you can taste the attention they put into preparing their meals.

The city of Geislingen an der Steige with its five valleys is nestled in a nature reserve and surrounded by the heights of the Swabian Alb. It only takes 45 minutes to hike from the train station up to the picturesque ruins of Helfenstein Castle. From there, enjoy a wonderful view of the city. If you still have a little energy left, walk a bit further to the Ödenturm, which lies high up on a rocky spur. It has been preserved over the centuries and is now one of the city's landmarks. There are more vantage points around the city from which you can look out over the plateau of the Swabian Alb and far into the Filstal Valley.

The size of the city also has an impact on the nightlife. Many students commute home on weekends, so it's quieter than you might be used to. However, the city does have a cultural life of its own: Parties sometimes take place at the former indoor swimming pool, which was converted into an event location, and concerts and cabaret take place in the local cultural centre and some of the local pubs. The student initiatives and associations at the university of applied sciences also organise parties, often at the beginning of the semester. And in the residence halls, there are unofficial flat-share parties. It's all the more important to get to know people and make contacts so that you can find out from your friends what's going on. But if you really want to go clubbing, you should go to Stuttgart or Ulm.

Nevertheless, everything you need is available in town. The sports centre of the higher education institution offers many activities, and the pretty city centre invites for shopping and strolling around. As small as Geislingen may be, the town's historic half-timbered houses and almost completely preserved medieval town layout are impressive. One of the most impressive buildings is the town church. And the Alte Bau, which today houses a museum, is considered one of the most beautiful and stately half-timbered houses in Württemberg.

There is a well-known outlet shopping centre in the town, where you can not only find bargains in various shops, but which also has interesting architecture: among other things, a converted historic fish hall from 1912 brings its very own industrial charm to the ensemble of buildings.

And in the run-up to Christmas, you should make a trip to Esslingen. The Christmas market there is a real highlight!
