We can’t deny that Furtwangen is a bit off the beaten track. But if you appreciate fresh air, large forests, mountains and waterfalls, Furtwangen will immediately compensate you for this. You will also come into first-hand contact with neat regional traditions and quickly make new acquaintances among the many students.
Furtwangen only has around 9,000 inhabitants. The distances are easily walkable, and the atmosphere is casual. Even though there are shops, cafés and bars here, it's best to go to nearby Villingen-Schwenningen for larger errands or the occasional visit to a cinema. By bus, you have connections to the neighbouring towns and also to larger cities such as Freiburg. But if you want to be more flexible and travel more quickly, then a (rental) car is very convenient and makes your everyday life easier.
Furtwangen has one higher education institution, Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU). It has nine departments at several locations - Furtwangen, Schwenningen, Tuttlingen, Rottweil and Freiburg. In Furtwangen itself, about 2,700 people study and together with the other locations, there are well over 4,800 students. The size of the HFU enables you to quickly find friends among your fellow students, establish a rapport with the teaching staff and focus on your strengths. At the same time, the higher education institution offers a comparatively large variety of subject areas - here you will find, for example, business, media, health sciences or technical degree programmes. Thanks to the HFU’s applied research and the high level of practical relevance in its teaching, it also enjoys a good international reputation. Speaking of internationality: the higher education institution regularly organises the International Festival, where you can get to know the home countries of your fellow international students. Culinary delights, dance, music and a lot of fun are on the agenda!
