Studying in Frankfurt (Oder)

Frankfurt (Oder) offers you 4 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

Fresh air, a great river landscape and many leisurely outdoor opportunities: Frankfurt (Oder) is tranquil and nature-oriented, but it also comes with a lively cultural scene. And Poland is just across the river, therefore, you can experience at least two cultures in the rather small city. And if you need to be in a little more bustling place: A day trip to Berlin is easily possible.

Do you want to experience the European spirit and cultural diversity up close? Then Frankfurt (Oder) is the place for you! Frankfurt is connected to the Polish city of Słubice by a bridge. The two cities almost belong together in practical life and have thus grown into a so-called double city. Concepts for shared city life, such as public transport or housing, are designed jointly by the cities. For example, you can study in Frankfurt and live in Słubice. The teamwork of the cities is tangible: Frankfurt boasts about the cultural tolerance of its 60,000 inhabitants.

The close international cooperation is also reflected in the diversity of the cultural programme. The cultural scene of the two cities is always in motion and is characterised by creative ideas. This results in a wide variety of events and exhibitions. The German-Polish theatre festival UNITHEA, which is conceived and realised by students, is particularly popular. But you can also experience dance, art and music from new perspectives at other events such as transVOCALE, LABIRYNT or Folk im Fluss.

Take a short trip into the countryside: city and nature are right next to each other.

Frankfurt (Oder) is host to one of Germany’s Olympic Training Centres: top-class sports take place here!

The European guiding principle of international cooperation is put into practice, especially at the university: at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), people from over 100 countries study together. Accordingly, over 30% of the almost 5,000 students come from abroad. This means that you have the best possible opportunity to exchange ideas with international friends. In addition, thanks to the smaller class size and direct contact with the teaching staff, you have a lot of freedom in your subject specialisation or in how you organise your studies. At the university, choose between numerous degree programmes from the subject areas of law, economics and cultural studies.

The local nature offers opportunities for exercise and relaxation: In the numerous parks, forests and meadows you can be active, meet friends and simply take life at a slower pace. The floodplains of Ziegenwerder Island are particularly popular because of their beauty and proximity to the city centre: between classes, you can enjoy the breathtaking river landscape and stroll along the riverbank promenade. Things get a little more turbulent here at the numerous events: The open-air cinema days or various concerts in the warmer months attract a particularly large number of students.

Another highlight in Frankfurt an der Oder are the many lakes. From Lake Katja to the Treplin Lakes and Lake Helene, the landscape conservation areas offer fishing opportunities, camping sites and numerous hiking and cycling routes. Frankfurt's favourite is Lake Helene. Here you can not only hire boats or learn to sail but there is even a surfing school and a diving station! Of course, you can also just lie on one of the many sandy beaches and relax, read a book or listen to some music. The northern part of the most popular beach will be closed for a few more years due to construction, but luckily the lake is still big enough - it's not called the small Baltic Sea for nothing.
