Studying in Detmold

Detmold offers you 2 degree programmes in English at 2 higher education institutions.

One of the great advantages of living in Detmold is the short walking distances in the city centre and to both higher education institutions. In the city, you will immediately notice half-timbered houses, places to relax and little markets providing an alternative to supermarkets. Especially during summers, students playing music while sitting on their blankets in the parks resemble perfect student life.

Detmold is in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, right next to the Teutoburg Forest, and has around 75,000 inhabitants. The city is small and has a relaxed atmosphere, however, it can still offer a varied cultural programme – it is not for nothing that it’s called the "city of culture in the Teutoburg Forest". Along the so-called Kulturallee, you can visit various museums, exhibitions, concerts or theatre performances. There are also other, very different events taking place throughout the year: at the street theatre festival "Bildstörung" you can reflect on social issues. Or you can dance under the open sky at the concerts on the "Detmolder Sommerbühne". The performing bands come from different musical genres, so there is bound to be something for you. "Lippe kulinarisch" takes place in the castle park and invites you to nibble on delicacies and discover other specialties.

One reason for the broad and active cultural scene is the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, whose students showcase their talents outside the lecture halls. In addition to the Hochschule für Musik, the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts also has a campus in the city, the "Kreativ Campus Detmold". It offers degree programmes in construction and design (e.g. architecture, civil engineering, media or design).

Come to the Palaisgarten - maybe there will be live music later?

In Detmold you can marvel at what is probably the highest statue in Germany: the Hermannsdenkmal is over 53 metres high!

In Detmold, the distances are short, you can get everywhere quickly on foot or by bike. This is really convenient: Between your courses, you can spontaneously make a trip to the idyllic old town, whether it's to run an errand or just to relax and chat in one of the many cafés. You can find peace and quiet in one of the nearby parks; the Palaisgarten and the green lawns of the Schlosspark are particularly popular among students. Especially on warm days, you will meet many of your friends here - this is where people do sports, study, have picnics and, of course, play music. For many students, the Schlosspark is a recreation area in the middle of the city!

But the surroundings of Detmold are not to be sneezed at either: The city is surrounded by three mountain ranges - the Teutoburg Forest, the Lipper Bergland and the Eggegebirge. Besides just relaxing in nature, you have plenty of opportunities for outdoor sports. If you prefer a more leisurely bike ride, the Werre-Radweg tour is the perfect choice for you. You can either start your trip at the source of the Werre River in Horn-Bad Meinberg or directly in Detmold. If you go all the way to Bad Oeynhausen, you will even come to the Werre-Weser kiss - here the two rivers flow into each other. Of course, more challenging tours by bike or on foot are also possible. The numerous hiking and biking trails are very diverse, so you will certainly not get bored.

One highlight you should not miss is the Externsteine. This unusual rock formation attracts visitors from all over Germany and is always worth a look. Even though the rocks are worth seeing at year-round, we recommend a visit on warm summer days: then you can take a dip in the adjacent Wiembecketeich pond and afterwards return to your studies, refreshed and with a clear head.
