Studying in Coburg

Coburg offers you 3 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

"Small but mighty" – this saying rings true for Coburg. The historic buildings of the former residence city are a highlight for inhabitants and tourists to this day – the same is true for the rich leisure offers. There is always something going on in the city: Every year in July, for example, the largest samba festival outside Brazil takes place here! And that is just one of many festivals in Coburg.

If you’re looking to study in a place that isn’t frantic and overwhelming, the idyllic Coburg should be at the top of your list. With a population of 40,000, it will be easy to get acquainted with its lifestyle and its surroundings. Over 5,000 students reside in Coburg. Having only one higher education institution in the city makes it relatively simple and less expensive to find housing. It also can mean that you receive more one-on-one time with professors. Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts is located very near to the city centre, and everything is easily reachable on foot, with a bicycle or using the excellent public transportation in the city.

To explore larger cities, just hop on the train and head to Erfurt, Würzburg or Nuremberg, all of which are easily reachable by train. Don’t be away too long. In Coburg, you’ll find just as many interesting and historical sites as you would in those cities. The highlight is the Veste Coburg, which towers over the town and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Germany. There are three other fascinating castles in the town to explore as well.

Every year, well-known music acts come to Coburg for the open-air summer concerts!

If you’re interested in royalty, visit the Schloss Rosenau where Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was born.

Coburg offers a lot of entertainment in the form of festivals. Besides the aforementioned International Samba Festival, you can find these large gatherings year-round. In the spring, there is the Frühlingsfest with a lot of delicious food and carnival rides, as well as the Weinfest, where you can try out different wines from the region. The summer offers good weather and the Coburger Vogelschießen, which is the biggest Volksfest in Coburg. The Schlossplatzfest, which takes place at the palace grounds, is one of the most popular festivals in Coburg and has a full programme of music and food. An open-air concert series in the summer attracts popular bands. Like many other German towns, Coburg also offers a magical Christmas market that will keep you warm in the frosty winter.

If tranquil nature is more your cup of tea, then you can head either north or south for some hiking in the great outdoors. Take the train direction north and you will make it to the Thuringia Forest, which in summer offers long hiking routes and, in the winter, gives you the opportunity to watch winter sports. Direction south will take you to Franconian Switzerland with its beautiful landscapes and peaceful towns. These are beautiful spots to escape the stress of studying and being in the classroom.

As you can see, Coburg won’t leave you without fun opportunities. Getting a coffee or beer with your friends is also easy with numerous cafes and pubs throughout the town. The green spaces in the town won’t disappoint either as numerous parks can be found throughout the town.
