Chemnitz, the European Culture Capital of 2025, might surprise you! The former Karl-Marx-Stadt is the third-largest city in Saxony and is an important industry and high-tech location with many parks and cultural events at the same time. The relatively low living costs attract many students and if you are lucky, you might find a pretty flat in one of the city’s Wilhelminian style and Art Nouveau buildings.
Welcome to Chemnitz - the "city of modernity", at least that's how Chemnitz describes itself. About 250,000 people live here, around 8,400 of whom study at the city's only higher education institution, Chemnitz University of Technology. Here you can study natural sciences, economics or human and social sciences in a friendly atmosphere - and thanks to the niche degree programmes (such as e-mobility and regenerative energy technology; prevention, rehabilitation and fitness; sensor technology and cognitive psychology), you are sure to find the perfect course of study for you! Another special feature of the university is its openness and internationality: it strives for more acceptance of foreigners by, among other things, openly addressing existing conflicts in the city. Part of these efforts are also its approx. 160 partnerships with universities worldwide. In addition, 32% of the students come from other countries. So, you can meet people from all over the world and make interesting friends.
Speaking of international friendships: have you ever heard of the European Peace Ride (EPR)? This cross-border cycling tour brings together people from many - especially neighbouring - countries. The tour is pretty challenging, but even those who don't ride can have fun: on arrival in Chemnitz, there will be a big party.
