Studying in Augsburg

Augsburg offers you 9 degree programmes in English at 4 higher education institutions.

People from Augsburg like to make a fun dig at Munich, saying that Munich can only be beautiful when you live in Augsburg. Maybe there’s some bias to this, but the city truly has a lot to offer. The historical town centre and the picturesque old town with its many Lech canals give Augsburg an Italian flair. In addition, the many parks, the wide range of leisure and cultural activities, and its modern higher education institutions make the city an attractive place for your studies.

The University of Augsburg has a little more than 19,000 students; another higher education institution in town, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg, has about 7,000. With a total population of about 300,000, Augsburg might not be a small town, but it has a very cosy feel to it – and it offers plenty of picturesque views. The architecture with Renaissance fountains and grand old Baroque and Rococo houses will wow you – what better place to take it all in than one of the concerts on the open-air stage at the Red Gate. Next to the medieval backdrop, you’ll also see the aqueduct which is part of the UNESCO cultural world heritage of Augsburg’s waterways.

By the way, if you ever miss that big city feel, Augsburg has several daily train connections to Munich. The average travel time is 30 minutes: just perfect for a day trip. You could visit Munich’s Oktoberfest and return to your bed on the same day!

Housing is still affordable in Augsburg. Students recommend living relatively central within the city. This way, you’re closest to all the happenings and you can easily get to your lecture halls.

Once important for the water supply, today simply beautiful: the Lech canals.

Did you know? Augsburg has so many canals, that you’ll find more bridges there than in Venice.

Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Germany. Today, it offers loads of historically significant sites as one of the most important cities in Europe during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At the Schaezlerpalais, you can discover artwork from Germany’s Baroque period, and if you visit the Leopold-Mozart-House you can gain insight into the lives of the Mozart family through recovered letters, and even musical instruments at the childhood home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s father. With Augsburg’s many museums, here’s a special tip: you’ll get into most of the large and popular museums for free, on Sundays!

Augsburg is well-known for its relaxed atmosphere, with markets being an integral part of Augsburg city life. At the city market, traders sell fruit and vegetables from their own farms, for example. During the winter season, Augsburg’s Christmas market is a memorable visit, being one of the oldest, some also say the most beautiful, in Germany. Now that you know, make sure to take your friends along!

This city is great for the outdoorsy folks, and sports enthusiasts too. The Stadtwald, one of Bavaria’s largest nature reserves, is a 30-minute bike ride away from the city centre. You can also bike along the course of the Lech canal. If you’d rather swim, please don’t jump in the canal! You have the option of taking a refreshing plunge in Augsburg’s several swimming lakes and outdoor pools whenever you want to take a well-deserved break. Sporting can also be enjoyed as a spectator here: Augsburg’s football team, FC Augsburg, competes in the national league. Go and witness the atmosphere inside the stadium with all the fans and don’t forget to take some pictures!
